How to achieve a calm but and warm office: Part 4 – Keyboard and Mouse
Hands down, your keyboard and mouse will most definitely be a chance for you to up your game on the aesthetic front because just looking at these large pieces of hardware on your desk will either make you squee or sigh.
Psst! If you have missed the first of the series, I fell down a literal rabbit hole a month ago, and am gathering all my insights into multiple part posts, with examples and actual product links, plus my take on them.
I will give you what I see repeatedly pop up over and over again and what has endured through their hundreds of videos. I sometimes see paid partnerships or sponsorships from brands for certain things, but by the next video it is gone.
So I am also looking out for longevity in choice. I will also note afterwards, what I personally use / do and why.

KEYBOARDS
Who freakin’ knew there were SO MANY OPTIONS for keyboards?
A lot of people typically use the keyboard on their laptop but as I have aged, I have realized a couple of things when I have been working on a laptop for too long:
- My neck is strained
- My back is hunched
I mean obviously I will need more than just a keyboard, maybe a laptop riser or a monitor, but that is in a later post.
Ahem.
So, there is a huge trend going back towards mechanical keyboards, and not everyone is on board with just buying the flat, slim Apple white keyboard (which by the way, is still great because it comes in many languages), and are trying to achieve a certain aesthetic in their space by using the most used item ever with a computer… besides the mouse.
You can now customize the HECK out of a keyboard, and achieve what the kids like to call ‘a creamy sound’.
(Don’t worry, if your mind flipped to drinking tea and eating cake, you are not alone.)
This ‘creamy’ sound is different for everyone. Instead of a typical CLACK-CLACK on the keyboard that annoys everyone around you in the office, you can achieve a softer THOCK-THOCK or a TIC-TIC … it is hard to describe without a video, but just google “Creamy Keyboard” and watch some videos to understand what I am saying.
Or if you have an iPhone, imagine if the ‘keyboard sounds’ is turned on when you are tapping away on it, and that is what “creamy” means.
For me, the sound is important, and I rather like the sound of a nice creamy sounding keyboard rather than what I am currently using (the keyboard on my laptops)…. and I hunted high and low for something that was gorgeous and perfectly suited to my needs, out of the box.
OUT OF THE BOX AESTHETIC KEYBOARDS
If you are like me, and not keen on collecting keyboards, nor changing out the keycaps or customizing ANYTHING on your keyboard, yet are lusting after something pretty, then here are some keyboards for you:
- Lofree Dot Foundation (even comes with the matching number pad)
- Typewriter-style circle retro vibe keyboard that comes in 34 different colourways. THIRTY-FOUR. PEOPLE
- A light-up steam punk + metal style sleek keyboard 3 colourways
Want something more LUXE YET affordable?
Everyone is raving about the Aula F99 keyboard as being the most affordable of the bunch if you are going to change out to a mechnical keyboard. You can also then customize the keycaps to whatever colour scheme you want.
However if you want something more mainstream yet aesthetic out of the box, the brand Logitech that came up with a rather cute Pop keyboard in various colours as well – pink, purple, white and grey.
If you don’t want something so colourful, they also have many MANY other options from the same brands.
WAIT.. THESE ARE *ALSO* CUSTOMIZABLE KEYBOARDS
Remember how I mentioned swapping out the keycaps?
Apparently all you need is a screwdriver, some tweezers and you can ‘hot swap’ or switch out the keycaps on your keyboard to have customizable key caps, a different colour vibe, a new theme for when you feel a certain way….
Keyboards are the new handbags in this Cozy Aesthetic World. People collect them like Pokémon.
There are hundreds of videos reviewing each model and style. It is a real rabbit hole.
Take a look:
There are even switches you can buy for them for different sounds, they call them ‘baby racooon’ switches, or ‘baby kangaroos’… there is a whole world out here if you are willing to dive into it.
Here are the main brands that do them:
… to name a few of the major keyboard makers. You can also check if your keyboards are hot-swappable and change the keycaps out.
ERGONOMIC KEYBOARDS
Of course now we are talking about very specific keyboards, and thus far, I have heard the following brands be mentioned:
- ZSA Voyager
- Dactyl manuform-style boards which are the base but then you have companies that customize for it
- Kinesis Advantage360
MY TAKE ON KEYBOARDS
I have not tried split keyboards in person yet, but they are very interesting to me for the future, as I type A LOT.
Anyway, I did however, get overwhelmed with the sheer amount of choice in cute keyboards, and as I do not want to collect them, I simply went with the one that looked the nicest: to me, which was the Lofree Dot Foundation (even comes with the matching number pad). The sounds in the videos sound very good, and the reviews have been overall quite positive.
Plus, it looks incredible.
NUMBER PADS
If your keyboard doesn’t come with a dedicated number pad and you need one, buying an add-on is a good way to go. Here are some really pretty options.
- Retro 8BitDo mechanical numberpad
- Matcha typewriter key gradient coloured numberpad (the matching Matcha Green keyboard is here)
- Mofii round keycap numberpad that has various colourways
- Gasket creamy numberpad – it even lights up in colours
MY TAKE ON NUMBER PADS
I calculate things a lot, so this is actually a must-have for me.
My Lofree number pad is also a calculator.
MICE
For mice, there are less options in my opinion.
You have the typical standard looking mouse, and they come in a WIDE range of cute styles. I mean, seriously.
- Akko animal mice – the one pictured is capybara (an amazing animal)
- Strawberry mouse (this is another link) – this one went viral
- Logitech Pro X Mouse – this colour is AMAZING. I wish they would do this for the higher quality mice and keyboard setups
- Lofree Petal (they have other styles too)
…but if you are interested, these are the cutest ones I have found that are comfortable and ergonomic:
(YES. You can ABSOLUTELY find other mice options that are MUCH cuter with fun colours and so on, but when you are on a computer and mousing all day, the last thing you want to do is develop carpal tunnel syndrome or start feeling pain in your wrist, shoulder, neck, fingers, etc.)
So I am really, narrowing it down to the only mice you should consider if you are on the computer a lot, and not just for watching videos.
- Logitech MX Master 3S
- Logitech Lift
- Logitech MX Ergo S – ok I lied, this one is hideous but the trackball and not having to move your arm around when mousing (which is what causes shoulder pain and tension) is really a game changer.
I actually purchased all 3 of them so here is my personal experience with each as well as pros and cons.
Spoiler alert:
I only kept the Logitech MX Master 3S!
